| Three words characterize living at Whipsaw Saddle: View! Wildlife! Solitude!               |
![]() |
The house at Whipsaw Saddle has been our home for over four years. It is private and well protected,
with stunning views from every window. The 40-gpm well
produces soft, fine tasting water. A well-maintained county road offers year round access.
  White Bird is famous around Salmon River country for its mild weather. The area is Idaho's little banana belt, with 300 days of some sun and very little snow. We have the best of both worlds here: remote living with major services nearby. |
| We've added a lot of improvements since
finishing the house in 2000: lawn, trees and landscaping, rail fence, enclosed raised-bed gardens, a shed,
a gravel appproach area and much more. You'll see most of it as you browse through these pages.
A single hose bib runs a drip system that easily waters the many trees and shrubs we've planted. We picked native species and those suited to local conditions. No matter where you are, fighting mother nature tends to be a losing proposition. |

The Salmon is a wild river, undammed for its entire length. From White Bird it flows about 50 miles in a northwestern loop to join with the Snake. With two steelhead seasons each year, and one for chinook salmon, this river deserves its name. You can experience fabulous hunting and fishing right in your own back yard—along with other outdoor activities like whitewater rafting, kayaking, photography, hiking or just soaking up the tranquility. There are 3 ski areas and 3 golf courses an hour from White Bird. It's only 17 miles by road to the Snake River and Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, and just minutes to millions of acres of national forest and other public lands. |
Things to treasure here: Deep quiet that makes your ears ring; a night
sky brilliant with stars (there really is a Milky Way);
wildflowers to treat your eyes at every step;
and an unbelievable array of wildlife. The rugged beauty of this canyon rangeland takes
over your system. We saw these two guys from our porch.

We like to walk and we have everything here for it. We can go down the road for expansive views or up for a timbered setting. For variety we'll jump in the car and go a little farther for our stroll. Fifteen minutes either way and we can be walking along the Salmon River at 1,500 feet or up on Joseph Plains at 5,000 feet, in vastly different environments. During one such walk up on state land, a bull elk bolted across in front of us at about 50 yards. We see elk often on these walks. Just out of White Bird we've seen herds of 200 animals on a winter day. Deer herd up in winter too. Sometimes you see mulies and whitetails together. |
The million dollar views from Whipsaw Saddle have a big impact on us, and you'll see and hear a lot about them
on these pages. One of the many magnificent images from our dining and living room windows is 8,800' Patrick
Butte, which is about 35 miles south of us. With the sun low it's a light magnet.
No place can suit everyone, but Salmon River country has done just fine by us. Why don't you come and see how it strikes you? In a replay of early western settlement, people are once again rebounding into the mountain states after crowding the Pacific Coast. The best of Montana, Colorado and Wyoming are already gone or priced sky-high from demand. But Salmon River country has only recently been "discovered." If you're looking for a second home, retirement refuge, vacation retreat, personal hunting ground, haven for telecommuting or just a good investment, they are all here. Follow the links below to learn a lot more about this home we're selling, the land
it's on and what it's like to live at Whipsaw Saddle Ranch and around White Bird, Idaho.
We've lived in a lot of places and this has been the best.
