WHIPSAW SADDLE RANCH
THE HOUSE (and 120.5 acres)

This was before we put in the lawn, rail fence, shed or garden area. Compare with opening page.
Every window in this 2,500 s.f. home gives you a million dollar view of Salmon River country.
Jane's thoughtful presentation of space and walking/work patterns makes the apparent size even larger. The country-style plan did not come out of a magazine. Jane tailored it specifically to this amazing site. In the design she took into account every facet of living at Whipsaw Saddle. From shadow aspect throughout the day to the color of the local mud, the house fits its environment. This is a home to be lived in.
Doing the early design work—a labor of love
Window size and placement thoughout the house takes maximum advantage of the breathtaking views. From the master bedroom suite upstairs you can see in every direction, and the vista is truly astounding. Closets are abundant and well appointed everywhere. The utility room contains plenty of pantry space, a large deep sink for washing Gus, and a coat/boot area. The layout offers two alternative offices, which Jane and I occupy daily. One includes space for her drafting and sewing activities, the other houses the "computer department," where I hang out. Over the intercom the hungrier of us might call out, "Meet you in the middle for lunch."

End of the rainbow.
A greatroom occupies most of the main floor, comprising kitchen, dining and living rooms. Its openness gives you the feeling of being part of the landscape. Only the utility room and half bath are partitioned on this main floor. The master bedroom suite and bath take up the entire third floor, including a large walk-in closet and four other large and convenient storage areas. The daylight basement has 2 bedrooms, a family room and full bath, plus a 6-1/2'X 18' "cool room" and big linen closet.
The driveway enters onto a level, 3/4-acre building pad which is more than 600' from the road, assuring dust-free privacy. Along the driveway and in other strategic locations around the living area, I planted about 50 trees, taking care to not interrupt the incredible views. A new drip system waters them with a turn of the spigot. There is plenty of space for buildings other than the current house and shed, which is ATV-friendly and matches the house in color and design.
