Some front yard!

Dining room view: We see 4 miles of the river
Boredom doesn't come easy in Salmon River country. The canyon changes hourly, with the weather and with the ever-advancing and retreating shadows. The seasons get into the act, too, continually painting the canyon with broad-brush strokes that keep us saying, "Wow". In March greenup begins, then works its way up the slopes from river to rim until July, when the grassy areas fade to gold—again, from bottom to top. The painting reverses when bright autumn colors work their way down the hill. The Artist applies winter coats of white in both directions.

Off the road and through our gate. Softer ground.
In mid-December local ranchers drive their cows off Joseph and Doumecq Plains and head them down the hill to White Bird. From the 4-5,000’ summer ranges up on top, cowboys/girls and dogs move the cattle down to river-level feedlots at around 1,500’. Our place lies on a traditional shortcut along the route of these winter cattle drives. The cutoff at Whipsaw Saddle offers sore-footed cows respite from about three miles of hoof-pounding on Doumecq Road. On such winter days we may see 1 or 2 cars.
We shop weekly in Grangeville, 16 miles north of White Bird. It is the county seat so you have the government offices available, as well as all necessary services for day-to-day living: Hospital, grocery stores, restaurants, movie, farm store and building materials outlet etc. Every month or so we drive the 85 miles to Lewiston to stock the pantry with bulk items from Costco, WalMart, and Albertson's (and to raid Dairy Queen). Our trips to Portland have diminished. It didn't take long until we couldn't wait to get out of the traffic and back to the quiet.

The utilities are very reliable at Whipsaw Saddle, the worst electrical outage having been about 4 hours since we've been here. We have local Internet access and satellite TV service. We get one Spokane station directly.
