Journey North Projects

Our second class project, which is a global planting project, is now underway. Students weighed their tulip bulbs and measured the circumference of their bulbs. They recorded their findings on special graphs and then made predictions as to when the tulips will emerge and bloom.

Students helped to prepare the tulip bed and then planted their tulips.

Students took the temperature of the ground and of the air. We found the air temperature to be 85 degrees. The ground temperature was much warmer, at 100 degrees. It was a very fine, warm Indian Summer day.

The table below shows when tulips were planted, when they emerged, and when they bloomed in the last three years. It also includes this year's planting date.

Year Planted Emerged Bloomed
1997-1998 11/10/97 3/09/98 4/16/98
1998-1999 9/24/98 3/22/99 4/22/99
1999-2000 9/28/99 3/11/00 4/07/00

Our first Journey North Project - Send a Monarch to Mexico

On Friday, September 15, 2000, our class decorated butterflies to send to Mexico. These butterflies represent a symbolic migration of the monarch butterfly. Our message to the Mexican children had to be in Spanish, so Felipe Meza translated our English message into Spanish for us. This was great fun and a learning experience for all.

I want to thank the administration for funding our projects.

Special Guests in our Classroom

Loretta Yantis came to our class to give the students a special look into her life as a geologist. Loretta shared about her career choice, told of her job with a mining company, and shared samples of her geological collection. We appreciate her willingness to come and teach us about geology.

Another special guest in our classroom has been Mrs. Vicki Freeman. She has been teaching the students about Nutrition. Students have had an enjoyable time tasting the delicous foods that she brings. Pictured below are pictures of students snacking on vegetables and creating a "fruit sculpture."

Pennies for Sacajawea Monument

Students took collection bottles to all of the classrooms on Friday, September 15, 2000, to begin the collection of pennies for the school year. Across the state of Idaho, all 4th grade students are given the opportunity to donate their pennies. The goal is to collect $25,000 by the year 2003.
